In the past few issues of Salmon Trout Steelheader you probably noticed some articles by Sharon Trammell. Sharon is a professional writer and a member of the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association. Sharon has been an avid outdoorswoman since childhood growing up in Western Washington and has just released her new cookbook “Eat off the Land.”
Have some fun in the kitchen with recipes from Sharon Trammell’s new book, Eat Off the Land.
These days many people, including myself, are genuinely concerned about the ingredients found in off the shelf food products and rightly so. As I get older I try to live by the fact that if I cannot pronounce the names on the ingredients list then I probably shouldn’t eat it. In Sharon’s new book she takes this full tilt in a good way.
In her Preface she states that this is NOT a “prepper” cookbook. It’s not about hoarding 1,000 pounds of rice, flour and beans. It’s a detailed account of the many plants in our Northwest environment that can be prepared and consumed in a sustaining way. Much like the people who lived in the Americas for thousands of years prior to our “modern age” of bulk processed foods.
She goes into detail about foraging practices and ethical harvesting of fish and game. Recipes cover plants, Northwest game and many of the fish that swim in our local waters. Crustaceans are covered along with many vegetables and fruits. These are just a few of the subjects covered in her new book.
Many of the recipes have an identification guide with illustrations to help you identify different food types like Himalayan blackberries, fireweed, horsetail, nettles and more. Mushroom species are also covered but be sure to take caution. If you are not 100% sure of the species don’t chance it.
Many of the ingredients are growing right in our own back (or front) yards. I for one have more than a few dandelions in my yard and my neighbor has a crabapple tree that goes to waste!
With the holiday season quickly approaching Eat Off the Land would make a great gift for any friend or relative. Or make plans with friends and enjoy a healthy meal.
ENJOY!

Amazing cook book and journal for learning my way around the woods and what’s edible and learning new recipes to expand my knowledge.
